The Manchester School of Art Degree Show is now officially open to the public (13th-24th June 2015), showcasing the talent and achievements of final year degree and foundation students. But before the exhibition opened its doors at the weekend, there was the annual private viewing on Friday 12th June. It was such a lovely evening and felt like a real celebration of all the hard work of everyone from across the art school. It was a wonderful opportunity to finally relax and see the fruits of all the blood, sweat and tears over the past year!
It was so incredibly rewarding to see people viewing mine and everybody else's work and just generally enjoying the celebrations. Along with the unveiling of all of the artwork, awards were also presented during the private view and I was so excited and grateful to receive the Almuni Prize for my exhibition, chosen by practising artist Ben White. But what really made the evening special for me was that me and my friends all received a joint award together, chosen by the tutors, to recognise our contribution to the studio culture throughout the year. I've met some really amazing, talented and wonderful friends at Manchester School of Art and it was really special to have that memory together as we all go off in different directions in September.
The whole building was buzzing with life for whole three and a half hour viewing and there was love, alcohol and life all flying around in equal measure. A whole host of exciting people came along, including VIPs from industry, all the major galleries in the region, key figures from Manchester city council and journalists, as well as several thousand other guests. The beautiful new Benzi building really came alive for the occasion - even if we were all sweating buckets in the summer heat!
It was a joy to look around not only the foundation show, but all of the degree shows from across the school of art, from graphics to fine art to photography to interior design to textiles and more. There was so much wonderful work on show and it was great to meet and talk to some of the talented people behind it all.
I realise that this post may end up slightly photo-heavy, however I really want to document this event for myself because it truly was a special evening. Below is a mixture of photographs from the private view, ranging from some of the work on display, to my own show and images taken around the building throughout the night...
And I'd like to round it all up with a photograph of me with my foundation tutor, Louise, who has helped me massively throughout the whole foundation. I've come such a long way creatively since last September and it's down to her help, guidance and support. She's become a great friend to all of us in the graphics area and it has been an absolute pleasure to be taught by such a kind, funny and incredibly talented lady.
The Manchester School of Art Degree Show is now open to all and it would be amazing if you went for a look around if you're in Manchester over the next couple of weeks:
