Who doesn't love Venice, right? Perfectly Pinterest-able canals, gondoliers and venetian masks see the floating city pull in 27 million tourists annually - not bad for a city with only 60,000 local residents! Venice has been described as an outdoor museum, since almost everything you see around has some kind of historical, artistic or cultural value. It's no wonder so many people flock to beautiful Venice. But what if you want to get away from the crowds of cruise ship visitors? If you prefer something a little more secluded and untouched, I may have just the thing.
Burano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, about 40 minutes boat ride from from Venice itself. It is a true fishing village famous for its handcrafted lace and rainbow coloured houses. My boyfriend and I spent the morning exploring Burano on our holiday and I fell in love with it's beauty, it's one of those places where you really feel like you're walking through a postcard! I personally don't mind visiting busy tourist spots, but it really isn't my boyfriends thing and having gone to Venice before, I knew that a whole day there wouldn't be enjoyable for him. While there are touristy parts of Burano, much of it still has the working-island feel that is almost impossible to find on modern day Venice. So he was happy with the calm atmosphere and of course I was happy with the limitless photo opportunities this picturesque island presents! After getting lost within the technicolour island streets, we sampled the fresh catches, each getting a plate of freshly caught mixed seafood for lunch just on the waterfront.
Mazzorbo island is easily walkable from Burano too if you want to take the peace and quiet to another level. We felt like the only people in the world there! Admittedly, there wasn't much going on in Mazzorbo but to have a stroll around without another human in sight (apart from a local man painting his boat) in such a beautiful setting was wonderful. It makes it all the better when you think about the hoards of people not too far away struggling their way around central Venice!
To get to Burano, you will need to catch the number 12 vaporetto (Venice's water bus system) line. It runs from Venice’s Fondamente Nove stop and takes about 40 minutes. The boat also stops at neighbouring islands, Murano and Mazzorbo
