The Film Roll I Thought Was Destroyed

2017 has gotten off to a pretty unforgettable start for me. I celebrated my 21st birthday on the 18th February and was lucky enough to go away with my boyfriend and family to Iceland. We spent 3 nights in the Reykjavik area, touring the Golden Circle and dipping into the blogger-famous Blue Lagoon. The following weekend, I was blown away with being surprised by my boyfriend with a weekend in Paris! We travelled down on the Eurostar from St Pancras and had a wonderful couple of days exploring a few of the main sights and exploring a little off the beaten track. While Paris was a surprise, I had planned to take some 35mm film with me to Iceland to capture some of the memories. After doing some research into whether my film roll would be damaged by passing through the airport x-ray scanners, I concluded that for my purposes it would be ok to pass through the hand baggage scanners a couple of times (once on the way out and once on the return journey). Apparently the x-rays they use for checked luggage are far stronger and so it's advised never to put film roll in hold bags. I knew that I may experience some fogging but I wasn't too concerned. What I didn't account for was Paris. Given the security situation in the city, most museums and attractions required me to put my camera though an x-ray machine. Add this to the security checks for the Eurotunnel, I thought that my photographs would be all but destroyed by the time it came to developing. I estimate that this particular film roll passed through x-ray scanners around 10 times, and since the damage cased to film by x-rays is cumulative, I didn't have high hopes. But I have been pleasantly surprised by the results. Of course the x-rays have had some visible effect on the photographs, but there's something quite lovely about it. I thought I'd share a little mixture of photographs from the two trips.

Why Fall Is The Best Time To Visit NYC

I've been living in New York for over 3 months now, and I've been lucky enough to see the seasons changing from beautiful scorching hot summer days, to crisp cold winter mornings. The wonderful thing about New York is that there's always something going on, no matter the time of year. But the season I've really fallen in love with out here is fall, so here are all the reasons why you should make your next tip to the big apple an autumnal one...

5 Things To Do Alone In NYC

There's no doubt about it, New York is an amazing place to explore with friends and family. I mean, doesn't everybody dream of having their Carry Bradshaw moment, swanning around the streets on Manhattan, hand in hand with their girlfriends? But New York is just as great when explored solo. Having moved to London and then New York City, I've gained some experience (and a soft spot) for getting to know a city companionless! And though of course I've met some wonderful people along the way who I have shared some amazing experiences with, I still enjoy taking the time to enjoy my own company in the city. So here are my favourite things to do alone in NYC...

Upstate New York: The Catskills & Woodstock

As much as I love living in Manhattan, it can get a bit overwhelming at times. With over 8 million people rushing around the big city, it can feel impossible to get a bit of peace and quiet. Luckily, there's so much more to New York than just NYC. North of the city you can find vast areas of beautiful rural land, towering mountain peaks and incredible waterfalls. This week, my boyfriend and I ventured out of the Big Apple and into the historic small town of Woodstock in the beautiful Catskill mountains.

How I Spent My One Day In Milan

I have just returned from my holiday in Italy with my boyfriend, and I had such an amazing trip! If you follow me on Instagram, you will have seen that we stayed mainly at the southern end of Lake Garda, while making day trips to the surrounding areas - and one of these was a whistle stop tour of Milan! I was so looking forward to going to Milan for the first time, as I always fall head over heels in love with Italian cities. Here's what I got up to in the fashion capital...

10 Destinations On My Travel Wish List

I have been very lucky over the past few years travel wise and have managed to tick off quite a few of the destinations on my wish list. I'm still able to tag along with my parents on some of their holidays which my bank account very much welcomes! For me, travel is one of the best things you can spend money on, far better than anything material. Memories will last much longer than anything you can hold in your hand and at the end of the day. I am planning to do a post soon about my favourite past holidays, but for now I wanted to write down the destinations that I'm dreaming about for the future!

My Summer Travel Journal

You may have read some of my previous posts about what I got up to over summer and today I thought I'd tell the story in a slightly more creative post - since that's what this blog is meant to be all about! I recorded my summer travels in a journal this year, keeping everything from tickets, receipts, maps, postcards, papers and basically anything that would lay flat and record what I got up to, food I ate and places I visited. Anything that holds a memory of a trip goes in my travel journal.

How I Did New York In 4 Days

How I Did New York In 4 Days - Dreams and Colour Schemes

Along with Paris, London and Rome, New York is one of those staple cities that appears on every man and his dog's bucket list. I know it's certainly been on mine for a very long time, so when the opportunity came along for me to take a whirlwind trip to The Big Apple mid way through my holiday in Chicago, I grabbed it with both hands. I took the 2 hour plane journey from Chicago O'Hare to New York's LaGuardia airport on the Saturday morning for a 3 night stay in Times Square, returning to Chicago on Tuesday evening. This left me with 2 full days and 2 half days to experience as much of New York as I could possibly squeeze in. It was a task, and my feet didn't thank me one single bit, but here's how I saw the big city in 4 days...
